A popular local eatery is temporarily closed for remodeling.

With the sound of workmen all around him Jesse Ornelas explained that he had been planning the renovation of Casa Azteca for some time.

"I've had this remod in mind for some time," Ornelas said. "We needed to get it done and this seemed the right time."

Ornelas said he wanted to keep the restaurant open during the renovation but it wasn't possible considering the work to be done.

"I wanted to stay open and do this at night," Ornelas said. "It just couldn't happen for a couple of reasons. I couldn't get contractors to work at night and we couldn't keep the kitchen open during the remod."

Ornelas is working to re-open the restaurant July 4, but he isn't sure the work will be finished.

"We're waiting on the plumbing, which is pretty minor, I could probably do it myself but I'm going to have a plumber do it," Ornelas said. "We've had good relationships with the contractors we've worked with, especially Randy Wallace on the electrical and Jeffries Plumbing."

Ornelas has been active in the community having sponsored many educational events and is currently serving on the city of Nevada's Tourism Board.

"Education has always been important to me," Ornelas said. "If I could I'd still be a student, I enjoy learning. I try to help others where I can and it's nice when someone appreciates what you're doing for them."

Ornelas said it's just a coincidence that another Mexican food restaurant, El Charro, recently closed its doors without explanation.
