LIBERAL, Kan. -- The Nevada Griffons continued their slide in the Jayhawk League Wednesday as they were swept by the Liberal BeeJays in a doubleheader for the second consecutive day.

After managing just five hits in two doubleheader losses Tuesday, Nevada's offense was a little better Wednesday as the Griffons got a pair of two-run homers from designated hitter Justin Ellrich.

Justin Ellrich squares up a pitch during Wednesday's action. Ellrich leads Nevada with eight home runs this season. Nobody else on the team has more than two.

Ellrich hit one blast in each game but they weren't enough as the BeeJays won 10-6 in the first game and 3-2 in the second.

Nevada outhit Liberal 9-4 in the second game and two of the BeeJays' runs were the direct result of a throwing error.

The BeeJays have now won 10 of 11 and the Griffons have lost six straight, matching their longest losing streak of the season. It's the third time Nevada has lost at least five consecutive games this summer.

Liberal moved into first place in the league with the two wins.

The two teams meet for the last time in the regular season tonight in Liberal. The game starts at 7 p.m. and Nevada will try to avoid being swept in the season series by the BeeJays. Liberal is 7-0 this season against Nevada.

The Griffons are now 14-22 overall, 7-20 in the league.

Liberal improved to 24-15, 19-12.

The Griffons will be back home Sunday when they host the Derby (Kan.) Twins in another Jayhawk League doubleheader.

The team will be selling barbecue pork sandwiches at the game, complete with side dishes and dessert for $5.
