RIVERTON, Kan. -- Uniontown remained undefeated on the young season with a 23-14 win over Riverton Friday night.

Quarterback Chad Hays was responsible for all three of Uniontown's touchdowns and the Eagles also scored a safety.

The Rams scored first, however, on an 80-yard run by Brittan Cates in the second quarter. Uniontown came back as Hays scored on a nine-yard run. Luke Spainhoward's extra-point kick tied the score.

Spainhoward later hauled in an eight-yard scoring pass from Hays and hit the PAT again to make it 14-6 at the half.

"I was really pleased (with the win) because we got off to the slow start and Riverton was looking really good," Uniontown head coach Jim Mason said, "but we woke it up and kind of took it over."

Brandon Boyd collected a 48-yard scoring pass from Hays in the third quarter and Spainhoward once again nailed the conversion. Also in that period, Gage McKinnis tackled a Riverton ball carrier in the end zone for a safety, making it 23-6.

Aaron Dunbar's 85-yard touchdown run and the Rams' two-point conversion provided the final margin.

"But except for those two plays, we would have held them to negative yards rushing," Mason noted. "They had a couple of good, quick kids."

Uniontown finished with 316 total yards to RIverton's 159. McKinnis rushed for 88 yards on 20 carries. Hays was eight of 18 for 183 yards. Boyd caught two passes for 90 yards. Spainhoward hauled in four passes for 73 yards, led the defense with 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.

Uniontown held Riverton to two first downs.

The Eagles host Lyndon Friday night in another non-league contest.
