John J. "Johnny" Flynn

John J. "Johnny" Flynn, 80, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada. He was born March 25, 1926, in Mulberry, Kan., to John Joseph Flynn and Josephine Mary Bersnock Flynn. He married Florence Covington and she survives of the home.

John spent his early years in the Des Moines, Iowa, area. In 1942 he came with his family to Nevada. At the age of 17, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 until 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Honolulu and saw action at Leyte Gulf in the Phillippines where his ship was torpedoed in the Battle of Leyte Bay. John had various jobs in Nevada during his lifetime. He worked for Hubert Fowler at the Double Cola Bottling Plant, for George Baumann Construction and Wayne Spillman Heating and Cooling prior to the Nevada State Hospital for over 20 years until his retirement. In February 2002, he and several other area veteran were awarded an honorary high school diploma by Representative Ike Skelton in appreciation for their service in the U.S. Military.

Survivors in addition to his wife Florence of the home, include two sons, John J. Flynn and his wife Charlene, Nevada, and James M. Flynn, Sallisaw, Okla.; three daughters, Judy Rice and her husband Bob, Lamar, Mo., Joyce Stephens and her husband Greg, Nevada, and Janet Cullison and her husband Chip, Lee's Summit, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Huerter, Raytown, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nevada. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday evening, Oct. 4, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
