Honoring local veterans

Sunday, November 19, 2006
Last week, the chamber coffee was held at the local VFW. Two hundred yards to the west, behind the VFW, was the local cinema, featuring the movie, "Flags of our Fathers." To the east were the new flags leading to the U.S. National Cemetery. In the confines of the VFW building, the commander shared with us about the sacrifices that have been made by our Armed Forces and how we just finished an election where we all had the freedom to vote for the candidate of our choice. He also thanked this community for their continued support of those in uniform, not only while they are serving but after they return.

As we paused on Nov. 11, it was appropriate for all of us, young or old, to give our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for those who have served and those who continue to volunteer to be in harm's way so we can continue to have the freedom to choose. The interim director of the Fort was also at the VFW chamber coffee. She bid the Fort Scott Community goodbye and talked about what a special place this has been in her career.

She shared this parting thought: "This communityhas helped me affirm the values that I always knew were important." I hope you took time to vote, observed Veterans' Day, and continue to appreciate this special place we call home.
