NEVADA, Mo. -- Cottey College recently signed three girls to play volleyball for the Comets next fall, one with local ties.

Ashley Beckett, a 2005 Nevada High School graduate, will play for coach Marla Kannady Foreman, after not playing the past two seasons.

Beckett was a first-team all-district and all-Southwest Conference performer her senior season with the Nevada Lady Tigers. She is transferring from Missouri Southern, and will enter Cottey as a sophomore.

The two other players signed recently include Sara Cooper (no relation to current Cottey freshman player Tara Cooper), of Garwin, Iowa, and Candace Potts of Girard, Kan.

Cooper is a 5-9 outside hitter who recorded 47 percent of her team's kills and had a 92 percent serve rate her senior season for the Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines. She was named to the All-Iowa Star Conference team.

Potts is also an outside hitter, who carried a 92 percent serve rate and tallied 198 kills for the Girard Lady Trojans this season, as her team went 27-8, including a perfect 8-0 record in league play.

The new trio will team with returning Comets Tara Cooper, Dominica Sena, Vanessa McCoy, Michelle Schulte and Violet Chombwe.
