Ice blanket remains over Vernon County

Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Keagan Paarmann bundled up for the cold Monday and spent the afternoon sledding on the ice at Spring Street Park. Monday and Tuesday, area schools were closed and students sought out places for a rare opportunity for sledding. Most other activities, such as school athletics and dozens of other meetings and events were canceled, making sledding and snowboarding all the more tempting to area youth. Inches of ice remain on less-traveled roads and on anything else left outside during the storm, and although the brunt of the storm bypassed Nevada, a few isolated power outages were reported in outlying areas. Treacherous travel conditions also led schools to remain closed today; many districts had made the decision to do so by noon yesterday. Very little melting occurred yesterday, since temperatures barely made it into the double digits. The forecast had already indicated colder weather was in store overnight -- the mercury was to drop below zero for the first time this year. As Tuesday progressed, the forecast became more bleak, and by evening forecasters were indicating residents shouldn't be surprised to see a few flurries but no accumulation. A thaw is expected on Thursday when temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s. Additional snow flurries are forecast for this weekend.
