The Vernon County Relay for Life campaign, benefitting the American Cancer Society, got under way Wednesday at the kickoff lunch at Mojo's restaurant.

Co-chairs Leonette Hammontree and Shelly Ward began by thanking the attendees for their help and support.

"Thank you for coming," Hammontree said. "You are an important part of Relay for Life."

The relay, an event in which teams spend the night walking around the Square to raise funds and awareness, ending just after sunrise and symbolizing the renewal of hope with the sunrise, is scheduled for July 27 this year and some changes are planned in the activities associated with it.

An annual survivors' dinner will be held at the Eagles Lodge and committee members will do the cooking.

Some things remain the same, the sun and moon cards for remembering or honoring a loved one are still available and businesses around town will once again be displaying them for a one dollar donation.

Another favorite will remain the same, the basket auction. Delbert Johnston will once again be doing what he does best, talking fast and moving merchandise.

"We call it a basket auction," Hammontree said. "But really it's whatever you can get together to sell. We've sold gift certificates, shotguns, a scooter, you name it we can sell it."

Bingo will be held May 8 at the Nevada Elks Lodge. A $20 buy in will let you play six cards all evening.

Hammontree said she and Ward were seeking comments and suggestions from committee members and team captains.

"You are very important," Hammontree said. "If you have a suggestion let us know, talk to us. We really want to hear from you."

This year there is another T-shirt added to those available. The tan shirt is for people who may not be a part of a team but volunteer their time and skills to help out. Many other colors are available.

A representative from Joplin, Joetta Blades, told the group there was something else about the T-shirts.

"This year, for the first time, everyone gets a white participant shirt," Blades said. "That's in addition to the team captain shirt or committee shirt you get. You also get a purple survivors shirt if you are a survivor."

Hammontree reminded everyone of the importance of a good participation level and encouraged them to get everyone they could to attend the relay July 27.

"Be sure to invite friends, family, sponsors and everyone you know," Hammontree said. "Relay night is like nothing else."
