It took a Sunday night challenge match to confirm it.
Former No. 2 NHS singles player, junior Whitley delRosario, defeated former No. 1 player senior Molly Ferree, 8-4, to assume the top spot for the Lady Tigers.
"They challenged over the weekend on Sunday night at 8 o'clock," NHS first-year head tennis coach Katie Doherty said. "We do tennis all of the time.
"Whitley beat her pretty good."
Last season, delRosario and Ferree alternated at No. 1 singles.
"I think Whitley played a lot more over the summer than Molly did, so she's improved a little bit more," Doherty said. "Her backhand is definitely her best I've seen at the high school leve, seriously, and normally backhands are weak at the high school level.
"For her, it's her strongest suit. Her backhand is what helps her win. Whitley is really a good player."
NHS wins big Tuesday
LAMAR -- In her first match at No. 1 singles this season, delRosario defeated Lamar's Moriah England, 8-2, to improve to 4-1 on the season, including 3-1 at her former No. 2 post.
Ferree blanked Lamar's Megan Day 8-0 at No. 2 singles.
"I think Molly will do a lot better now that she's at No. 2," Doherty said.
Danielle Hadler, Megan Stacy and Elise McNeil -- the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 players for NHS -- also captured 8-0 victories over Lamar opponents.
In No. 1 doubles play, Ferree and delRosario bounced Lamar's Tierney O'Sullivan and England, 8-3, while Stacy and Hadler teamed up for the Lady Tigers in No. 2 singles to defeat Megan Day and Ali Bartlett, 8-4.

Well Mack, I wouldn't call this article a literary work of art. I think the team's huge win over Lamar is a much more important story than spending over half the article on a challenge match. I know you are new at the paper, so you probably don't know that challenge matches aren't exactly big news. The way you speak of Molly losing the challenge is frankly inappropriate. It's not a great feeling to lose a challenge, let alone have it broadcasted city-wide as if it is some important news story. You could have mentioned the fact that half of the boys basketball team were down at the courts being somewhat of a distraction, or that Molly was tired and not feeling too great. Further research would have shown you that several team members have been sick recently. However, you weren't at the courts at the time of the challenge to gather further information. I am not even through with high school, and I know to exercise more judgement in my writing than was ever exercised in this piece.
Well Mack, I have a lot of things on my mind about your article some of which I know not to say. One thing: NEVER put words in the news paper that did not come directly out of someones' mouth as you did with our coach. 2nd: if you are going to write an inappropriate article, atleast use correct grammar. You wouldn't know if "she beat her real good" unless you were actually there. I know you're new at the Nevada Daily Mail, so you should be careful if you want to keep your job. Lastly, the tennis team's players and parents are really not too fond of you, so don't be suprised if you get some odd looks.
Challenges are not important; write about what matters.
