Uniontown gains first victory of season

Saturday, September 22, 2007

UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown picked up its first victory of the season here Friday night while Jayhawk-Linn suffered its second consecutive shut out in a 20-0 Three Rivers League-Upper Division decision.

The Eagles gained 352 yards of total offense in a balanced attack. Quarter-back Travis Aikins completed seven of 15 passes for 166 yards. Zack Mason ran for 113 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns.

"It's nice, you betcha," Uniontown head coach Jim Mason said of Uniontown picking up its initial win. "The kids stepped up and made plays when they needed to. I was pleased with our effort. Eliminate the penalties (13 for 90 yards) -- that's the one negative. Everything else went pretty well."

Mason scored both of Uniontown's first-quarter touchdowns and also kicked the extra points. The first TD came from 13 yards out, the second from 69.

Aikins hooked up with Brandon Boyd for a 20-yard scoring pass in the second quarter to make it 21-0.

Shawn Pritchett's five-yard run in the fourth period capped the scoring.

Drew Johnson caught two passes for 53 yards for Uniontown while Pritchett and Boyd duplicated each other's statistics, hauling down two passes each for 52 yards.

Pritchett was also a leading tackler on defense, sharing high honors with David Shank as each made seven tackles.

Statistics were not available for Jayhawk-Linn.

Uniontown is 1-0 in the division, tying Pleasanton atop of the standings, and 1-3 overall. Jayhawk-Linn fell to 1-1, 1-3.

The Eagles travel to Baxter Springs next Friday. Jayhawk-Linn will play host to Drexel, Mo.
