NHS tennis going strong

Nevada senior Megan Stacy beat Fort Scott, Kan., Brittany Doherty 6-1 Tuesday afternoon in her final home match. Nevada plays in the Thomas Jefferson Invitational Friday and wrap their regular 2007 season with matches in Lamar on Oct. 1 and in Harrisonville on Oct. 2.

The Nevada Lady Tiger Varsity tennis team swept the Tigers from Fort Scott 9- 0 in a non-conference match Tuesday night. It was the last home match for seniors Molly Ferree, Megan Stacy, and Kayla Stiles who took their singles matches 8-0, 8-1 and 8-0. Freshman Danielle Hadler, and Juniors Whitley del Rosario and Elise McNeil also won their singles matches in a decisive manner with scores of 8-4, 8-1 and 8-0.

In doubles play, the teams of Ferree/del Rosario, Hadler/Stacy, and Stiles/McNeil all came away with strong wins to complete the sweep.

In a recent match played Sept. 20, the overall score was less dramatic, with Nevada falling 4-5 to Carthage. In varsity singles play, Whitley delRosario fell to Crystal Dalton in a 5-8 loss for Nevada. Hadler and Ferree each took their matches, 8-2. Stacy took on Baylee Blagg for an 8-4 win, and McNeil fell 6-8, in a hard-fought battle, and Kayla Stiles fell, 4-8.

In doubles delRosario/Ferree won over Dalton/Smith, 8-4; while the Stacy/Hadler and McNeil/Stiles teams both took losses, 5-8 and 8-1, respectively

In JV doubles, Daven Smith and Ashley McKinley won over Gabi Houlihan and Jordynn Brown, 6-4. Nicole Foreman and Coleen Didden won over Carthage's Magali Cabral and Veronica Spienle, 6-4. Cherokee Minershagen and Ashley Magsam fell 1-5 against Madeline Marsden and Adri Peoples In JV singles, Kenzie Crews won over Kelsey Scott.

The Lady Tigers will be competing in a 10- team tournament hosted by Thomas Jefferson in Joplin this Friday. Next week they will complete their dual matches, and then begin district play in Joplin on Friday, Oct. 5.
