October is the month for baseball as major league teams square off against each other to determine who will play in the World Series. Saturday, Oct. 13, Fort Scott National Historic Site will be hosting its own "Fall Classic" as teams from Fort Scott and Nevada contend against each other in a Civil War era baseball game. The game, which will begin at 1 p.m., will be played on the parade ground of Fort Scott NHS and will be conducted according to 1860s rules. Period equipment will be used as will period costuming; the Fort Scott team will be adorned in Union kepis, while players from Nevada will be sporting Confederate caps. A little known southern delicacy, goober peas, known to us today as peanuts will be provided free as snacks to participants and observers.
The site is recruiting participants age 12-18 to play on the teams and is still in need of some players to fill both teams' rosters. If interested and available to play on one of the teams, contact Park Ranger Barak Geertsen at (620) 223-0310 as soon as possible. Participants must be registered in advance in order to play.
In addition to the baseball game, site volunteers will be dressed in period costume at various locations throughout the site and will be portraying a laundress, an officers' wife and the post surgeon. These activities are being held in conjunction with "The Hop" Car Show, being hosted in downtown Fort Scott from Oct. 12-14.
Fort Scott National Historic Site is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is an entrance fee of $3 for each adult age 16 and over. Children 15 years old and under are admitted free of charge. For more information call the site at (620) 223-0310 or visit the facility's Web site at www.nps.gov/fosc.
