Local businesses, events launch holiday shopping season in Nevada

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

The holiday shopping season begins in Nevada on Friday and Saturday, when many Nevada businesses will take part in the annual "Fall and Christmas Open House" event.

Local businesses will welcome in the public during special times -- 6-8:30 p.m., Friday; and beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday.

For Rinehart Jewelry, 205 W. Cherry, the event is extra-special.

"We are incorporating our 55th anniversary sale along with it. The sale actually starts (Wednesday) and we will be open for the open house Friday night and Saturday," said Kathy Butler.

Butler noted that the event "sure is an excellent time to get a jump on the holiday shopping. People can see what Nevada really offers with all the different businesses; they all have so much to offer. People don't realize what they have, right here in Nevada."

Butler noted that the quality of service customers can get in Nevada is second to none, and noted that certain products available are unique, and the perfect gift could be something they can only find right here at home, according to Butler.

"We have had people come in and say they've looked in Joplin, they've looked in Kansas City, but they found what they needed right here," Butler said.

Several area businesses will offer refresehments and will participate in a drawing for $100 in Chamber Bucks -- a gift certificate that can be used at many participating area businesses.

Open houses also will be hosted by May's Floral and Gifts, 101 W. Cherry, and Chair Mart Showcase, 103 N. Mail, Hertzberg Furniture with Perfect Touch, 116 E. Cherry; Missouri Northern Pecan Growers, in the north frontage road to U.S. 71; Interior Motives, 611 E. Cherry; Ramey's Price Cutter, 500 E. Cherry; Balloon Events and More, 215 W. Cherry; Cavener's Library and Office Supply, 108 N. Cedar; and Madison's Place, 104 E Cherry.

Visitors can take a moment to enjoy a tasty treat or an extra-special hot coffee at Belle Rose or Daylight Donuts while shopping on the Nevada Square. Both businesses are also participating in open house activities.

Meanwhile, truly unique gifts can be found at the fourth annual On My Own, Inc., Christmas Bazaar Craft Fair and Bake Sale, on Saturday, Nov. 3. "This is your opportunity to purchase unique, homemade gift items created by disabled area residents with special talents for crafts and baking," said Pat Chambers of On My Own.

Added to this year's festivity is a chili/chili dog fund-raising luncheon for On My Own, Inc.

Sponsored by On My Own, Inc., the non residential Independent Living Center, this year's Bazaar will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the City/County Community Cen-ter, 200 N. Ash, Nevada.

"This year's lineup of exhibitors promises a special selection of handmade items including crocheted items, quilts, paintings, gift baskets, baked goods, men's hats, jewelry and beautiful holiday arrangements. The menu for the fund-raising luncheon includes a bowl of chili or a chili dog, chips, homemade cookie and a drink for only $3," Chambers said.

There is no admission charge and there will be a door prize drawing. "Don't miss your chance to find something special for the special people on your holiday gift-giving list." Chambers said.

The fun for visitors and local residents alike doesn't stop there. Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3 o'clock, Nevada High School students will portray ghosts from Vernon County's past brought to life in a unique event, a Cemetery Walk at Deepwood Cemetery.

Students have prepared historical presentations about figures from Vernon County's past who helped shape the community. This event is free and open to the public, and viewers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
