FSNHS announces holiday hours

Fort Scott, Kan. -- Fort Scott National Historic Site will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24 -- 25, for the Christmas holiday and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, in observance of New Year's Day.

Visitors may enjoy the fort grounds during daylight hours, but the buildings and visitor center will not be open, according to a press release from historic site personnel.

The site will be fully operational throughout the remainder of the holiday season, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., daily.

During the month of December, the site's bookstore will feature discounts on several gift books and theme related products for those history buffs on your gift list.

America the Beautiful Interagency passes, which provide free entrance to all units of the National Park System and many other federal recreation areas ar also available. They cost $80 each and are good for one year from the date of first use.

Administered by the National Park Service, Fort Scott National Historic Site commemorates Fort Scott's role in the opening of the West, Bleeding Kansas, and the Civil War.

Fort Scott National Historic Site consists of 20 historic structures, a parade ground and five acres of restored tallgrass prairie. A short walking trail goes through a portion of the prairie.

The entrance fee is $3 for persons age 16 and above. Children enter free of charge.
