This was the Tigers' 36th consecutive victory over Iola, which hasn't beaten the Tigers since February 1985.
The Tigers (9-5 SEK, 12-6 overall) were playing without starter Tony Karleskint, who was fighting an illness. But Barner's effort, which included 20 first-half points, and a season-best scoring effort from senior John Leek eventually got Fort Scott going.
Iola (3-11, 5-13) didn't make it easy, at least in the first quarter, as the Mustangs trailed just 14-11 going into the second. But Barner scored eight of Fort Scott's first 11 points of the second to help put his team ahead, 25-13, with 3:50 remaining in the half.
Leek chipped in with a three-point goal and a couple of assists while Barner added to his first-half scoring spree in a 14-2 run that ended the half and saw Fort Scott up 39-19.
"The kids came out and played hard," Fort Scott head coach Jeff DeLaTorre said. "(Greg) Hayes was shooting well early but we tightened things up in the second quarter."
Hayes, who was Iola's only double-figure scorer with 16 points, scored each of the Mustangs' first eight points. But he had just one point in the final 12 minutes of the first half and Iola couldn't find a complimentary scorer to help take the load.
The Mustangs continued to scrap and scored the first five points of the second half. But Leek -- who had 12 points and six assists -- spotted up and knocked down a three-point shot that sparked a 9-0 run that effectively put away any remaining hope Iola had of getting back into the game.
Barner converted in 11 of 19 shots from the field, most of them layups. Leek hit on five of seven shots, two of which were three-pointers. No other Tiger had more than five but this was a night when a third scorer wasn't really necessary.
Fort Scott shot 46 percent from the field, making 23 of 50 attempts. Iola shot 33 percent on 14 of 43.
The Tigers controlled the boards for a 36-20 margin. Barner had nine rebounds and Jeff Johnson had eight.
Fort Scott travels to Parsons for an SEK make-up game Monday night. Although the Vikings are just 3-10, 3-14 after losing to Coffeyville, 73-64, Friday night, this game is still a key one as it will be the last one counted toward Sub-State seeding. The brackets will be released during the day Wednesday.
"That's a tough place to play,' DeLaTorre said of Parsons' Harold C. Johnson Gymnasium. "We know they're going to be ready. They will play us tough. They're going to fight. But I'm proud of the way we've been playing lately and we want to keep playing better."
Fort Scott will go into Monday's contest on a four-game winning streak, its longest of the season.
JUNIOR VARSITY-- The Tigers took a 63-43 win as Brandon Boyd scored 18 points and Mikey Karleskint added 11.
