At approximately 8:15 p.m. Vernon County Paramedics along with Sheriff's Office Deputies and area first responders were dispatched to a residence near the intersection of Katy Track and 2900 Road about 7 miles east of Walker, in response to a reported "self defense" shooting. Upon their arrival paramedics and deputies found one man deceased, having suffered two gun shot wounds to the torso; one just below the right nipple and the other just above his waist to the left of his abdomen.
Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman said the shooting was a direct result of an argument caused by heavy drinking by all parties involved. Peckman said he understood that three people were inside the mobile home at the time of the shooting, one woman and two men, with one of these men -- the suspected shooter -- on oxygen.
The shooting apparently took place in the kitchen area of the mobile home.
Two witnesses were taken to the Sheriff's Office for further questioning, while three others, including the shooter, remained inside the trailer to be interviewed by Deputy John Randall and Peckman.
Names and charges could not be released at the scene, prior to an official arrest warrant being issued, however, Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman said the shooter could be arrested and charged after their initial interview and investigation.
Individual accounts could not be released until interrogations had been conducted by the Sheriff's office deputies.
A neighbor said it was common to see and hear loud and disorderly activity at that home and that this was not the first alcohol has led to an argument on the premises.
Peckman said this type of crime scene is not entirely unexpected when alcohol is involved in an argument.
"Alcohol generally causes fights, then the worst happens," said Peckman. "This is one of the worst."
The victim's name was not released at the scene and is expected to remain unreleased pending the notification of his family.
Peckman expected the Sheriffs Office' investigation of the crime to take a considerable amount of time. He said "We're going to be at this for a while."
