Nevada freshman baseball overcame a six-run deficit in game two to win a doubleheader over Carl Junction Monday night at Lyons Stadium.
Taylor Scotten started the first game for Nevada and held Carl Junction scoreless over three innings before giving up two in the top of the fourth on a fielder's choice-RBI and a base hit to left-center field.
The Tigers finished with eight hits, highlighted by Scotten's 2-RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth to put Nevada up 11-2. Carl Junction had just four hits in the first game.
Nevada dug itself in an 8-2 hole in game 2 despite Carl Junction's starter beginning the bottom of the first inning with 14 straight balls. Nevada tied the game at two after the first inning before Stephen Jenkins gave up five straight two-out hits in the second that resulted in six runs for the visitors.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Scotten hit a 2-RBI double followed by an RBI base hit from Jonathan Butler. The Tigers scored four runs on four hits to pull within 2 in the fifth.
Carl Junction went down in order in the top of the inning, leaving the door open for Nevada. Jordan Herren led the inning off with a base hit, followed by a double from Scotten and an RBI base hit from Butler to pull Nevada within one.
Carl Junction's pitcher then balked home the tying run before Spencer Scotten wandered off second to induce the throw to the base, leaving Trent Yarsulik room to score from third for the winning run.
Nevada had nine hits in the second game and gave up eight to Carl Junction. The next freshman game is Thursday, April 24 against Neosho at Lyons Stadium.
