Man's best friend is the star of the show

A hairless Chinese crested dog named Zoose was a shoo-in for the ugliest dog title. Zoose was accompanied by Lotus Van Dyk in the show ring.

Dogs and owners took over the courthouse lawn Wednesday afternoon, as all manner of four-legged contestants entered one of two arenas for a chance to be named top dog in one of 22 categories, ranging from longest nose to best kisser.

First-timers mingled with those who are Bushwhacker Dog Show veterans, but all had their moment in the spotlight.

The Whaleys brought Jada and Phantom to the show -- Jada's a veteran from last year; Phantom took his first jaunt into the arena this year.

Crystal Whaley said she comes to the show mostly because, "we just like to come up and look at the other dogs."

Apparently, many others agree, because several dogs, owners in tow, attended the show without competing. Jada and Phantom both competed for the title of most unusual eyes but split up to compete in the longest ears and longest legs contests.

A wide variety of dog breeds were represented in the show, including some unusual breeds, such a papillion, a small breed known for its dramatic ears; and a Chinese crested dog, a small breed known for its unusual appearance.

Full results were not available, but certificates were given to the top three contestants in each class, and goodie bags were given to the first 40 to enter. A host of prizes also were given away in drawings in conjunction with the show, hosted by Wonderful Animals Giving Support and Vernon County People for Pets.
