Griffons knock off Southwest Elite

Monday, July 7, 2008

Griffons shortstop Tommy Fitzgerald is safe at home in the seventh inning while SW Elite catcher Jerrod Alexander waits for throw to home during Friday night's game at Lyons Stadium. Alexander, a 2008 NHS graduate, will be playing baseball next year for North Central Community College, Trenton. The SW Elite is a 19 and under baseball team made up of players from the Southwest Missouri area. They agreed to play the Griffons on Friday after the Park City Rangers canceled at the last minute. With the exception of NHS senior Colby Shepherd, and a couple of others, the SW Elite is made up of recent high school graduates who plan to play baseball at some college next year. In addition to Alexander, 2008 NHS graduates Jordan Kerbs and Kyle Hughes play on this team, as well as past NHS graduates Dakota Bright and Trent and Cody Thompson. The team is coached by Donny Pennington and Alan Shepherd. The Griffons beat the SW Elite 7-3 and will play them again on July 19 and 20 in a regularly scheduled series. The Saturday night game scheduled with Park City was canceled on Saturday morning by the Rangers. The Griffons will play the Hays Larks tonight and Wednesday at 7 p.m.
