Nevada varsity, JV volleyball take wins at Stockton

Saturday, September 27, 2008
Herald-Tribune

The Nevada High School Lady Tigers volleyball team competed against Stockton Thursday night in another road match.

Both the varsity and JV matches ended up extraordinarily close, but Nevada was able to come out on top. The varsity team needed three sets to take the match, but were able to pull it off by a final score of 17-25, 26-24, 25-19.

"We got off to a slow start. We could not get anything going in the first game," Head Coach Becky Lowery said. The struggles continued through the first half of the second set, Lowery said.

After going down early in the second set, Taylor Means went back to serve and was able to string together six straight points to put Nevada within one before a timeout by Stockton stopped play. After the timeout, Means jumped-served four points in a row -- the last three being aces.

"That ignited the team. We got pumped after that," Lowery said.

Nevada finished strong and went through their entire rotation before Means was able to come up and serve the set point. That intensity continued for Nevada through the final set, allowing Nevada to pull off the win.

Means finished out the night with a team-high nine points while Mariah Mock led with 12 kills. Kori Lowery added 11 assists and Emily Moore put together a strong defensive performance with 11 digs.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to be in action again tonight as they travel to Carthage to play in the Carthage Invitational tournament.
