Saturday, October 11, 2008

The Fort Scott Community College Construction Trades Program will be celebrating Careers in Construction Week from Oct. 13-17 with different events. Careers in Construction Week was created to raise awareness and give recognition to the craft profession.

On Monday, Oct. 13, the FSCC Construction Trades program will have a table set up at the Fort Scott High School. Concrete and Intro to Craft Skills Instructor Mike Hansen will be doing a demonstration for the students from 11 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.

Representatives will talk to the students about careers in construction and will have give-aways.

Judy Meister, FSCC occupational Rrecruiter, and Chris Sterrett, director of construction trades will take a trip to the Miami County Campus on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Representatives will talk with the students about the program and have a table set up with fun construction quiz questions; a construction trades video and give-aways.

Wednesday morning, at 6:45, Construction Trades Director Chris Sterrett will make an appearance on the FSCC bi-monthly radio show College Connection to speak about the different careers available in the construction industry. Sterrett, Meister and FSCC Masonry Instructor Bud Johnson, will visit Lamar Technical School.

Johnson will present a brick laying demonstration and the three will have a table set up in order to spark student interest in the program.

Sterrett, Johnson and Construction Trades Admin-istrative Assistant Alison Olin will visit Uniontown High School on Friday, Oct. 17.

They will have the program's table filled with information and give-aways. Johnson will conduct another brick laying demonstration and the crew will be talk with students about the Intro Craft Skills and plumbing classes that FSCC will start to offer in the spring.

Currently, most construction trades classes are being taught off FSCC's main campus at local high schools. This semester, there is a masonry class being taught at Pittsburg High School by Johnson.

Pittsburg High School Principal Donna Zerr is positive about the new class and said, "For most of the students in the class, this is the first college class anyone in their family has actually been enrolled in and having the masonry class on our campus takes away many of the obstacles for students to be able to complete this class."

A crucial part of the program is establishing strong partnerships with the local high schools and Pittsburg State University.

The 11 area high schools that have partnered with FSCC include Fort Scott, Girard, Uniontown, Paola, Louisburg, Pittsburg, Osawatomie, Fron-tenac, Arma and Jayhawk-Linn.

FSCC is using the Careers in Construction Trades Week as an opportunity to reach out to local high school students about the field of construction and hopefully garner some interest to the program.
