Letter to the Editor

Divine retribution? You bet!

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Dear Editor,

"Quo Vadiz?" the ancient Romans asked when their empire ruled the world, then crumbled. If it seems like history repeating, where is America going? Why? The economic squeeze seems headed for a depression, with job losses, home mortgage foreclosures, industrial banks and insurance giants collapsing, and everybody insecure and worried, not to mention natural calamities such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, earthquakes and wildfires.

Do you suppose God is angry? Why would He be upset? The Supreme Court has proclaimed three times that America was a "Christian nation." His people were to be called by His name (e.g. "Christian"). If so, and he promised to bless us ("My people") when they follow His ways, and to punish them when they don't, then you might conclude He is spanking His naughty children.

Recent examples are the collapse of a major bridge in a northern city after an atheist there actually filed a suit against God, and the history-making wildfires in California following the governor's approval of a same-sex marriage law. Cause and effect? You bet.

America has had her foot on a banana-peel, so to speak, ever since the persecution of home-schoolers and the removal of prayer and Bible reading in the government public schools. Public speakers, politicians and TV interviewers seem to fear to even mention the holy name of Jesus Christ, except as a curse-word.

Can all this explain our recent calamities and the politicians' ignorance of both God, as well as our U.S. condition? Where are the preachers who will preach righteousness and obedience above all, as they did in the 13 colonies?
