The students at St. Mary's School in Nevada recently joined with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in their Pennies for Patients campaign. The students collected money of various denominations to contribute to the program. Pennies for Patients is a service-learning program that offers students the opportunity to help local blood cancer patients by donating change, used to fund research, educational programs and patient financial assistance. The students collected $91 during the drive. From left: Benjamin Nowak, Hannah Godsey, Laura Kimmell, Madison Murphy, and Cody Jenkins. --Submitted photos

St. Mary's School students participated in the school's annual Thanksgiving Basket food drive activity. The school adopted a local family of five and encouraged the students to contribute food for the family. The students did a wonderful job of bringing in a variety of food for the family. Other service activities take place at the school throughout the year, and educational programs also take place. For example, Nurse Tracy Barmann, Nevada Public Schools, taught the students about the Great American Smokeout. Her presentation contained information regarding the dangers of smoking and tips on how to help those who are trying to stop smoking. There was also an activity to demonstrate how it feels when a person has difficulty breathing.
