Children killed in early morning house fire

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

An early morning house fire caused the deaths of two children Wednesday. The fire, at 54 highway and 1700 road, in the Darren and Cheryl Dennison home, was reported to the Vernon County Sheriff's office at 2:22 a.m. The house was fully engulfed when the first reporting law enforcement and fire personnel arrived at the scene.

The deceased children, 11-year-old Amanda Shadden and five-year-old Coleen Shadden, were alone in the house with two other children, Kadessa and Braxton who were able to escape the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation with the State Fire Marshall but a possible cause given in a press release from the sheriff's office was the home's wood burning fireplace.

The Vernon County Sheriff's office, the Nevada Police Department, Nevada, Milo, Compton Junction and Walker fire departments all responded to the fire.

Family friend Chris Hendren has started a fund, the Dennison Family Fund, at the Metz Banking Company to help the family.

"I just wanted to do something, Darren has been a friend for a long time and I just wanted to do what I could to help out," Hendren said. "This has just devastated them and they need all the help they can get at this point."
