The Hume Hornets finished strong in the Hume Invitational basketball tournament with two victories recently.

On Friday, Jan. 30, the Hornets squared off against Sheldon and showed a dominant performance with a 65-34 victory in the semifinal contest. Cameron Hinton led the effort for Hume with 21 points, followed by Cody Franklin, Eric Pruitt and Andy Yarick with 10 apiece.

The Hornets had a very strong offensive night as they shot 66 percent in the game from the field and 63 percent from the free-throw line. Yarick nearly pulled off the double-double as he finished out the night with nine rebounds.

The next night night, Jan. 31, the Hornets took on Miami in the championship game and found themselves in a much closer contest. The Hornets struggled offensively in the contest, shooting just 43 percent from the field and 60 percent from the stripe, but it proved to be just enough to take the game by a final score of 51-45.

Ryan Austin led the offensive effort on the night with 24 points, and Hinton pulled down a team-high six rebounds. "We did not play that well, but we played well enough to win in the second half," head coach Scott Morrison said.

The boys had three players selected to this year's all-tournament team in Austin, Hinton and Franklin, while Miami's Ryan Good and Timmy Powell, Sheldon's Eric Leavell, and NEVC's Grant Davis made the team as well. On the girls' side, Hume finished third in the tournament and Katie Orear and Sara Farrar earned their way onto the all-tournament team, along with Butler's Lauren Wainscott and Tori Stauffacher and Sheldon's Chasity Ashworth, Hailey Conner and Lexi Rawlings.

Sheldon won the girls' side of the tournament.
