Mann wins two medals for J-Linn

WICHITA, Kan. -- Jayhawk-Linn junior Steven Mann won the fifth and sixth medals of his high school career at the Kansas Class 3A State Track and Field Championships here Friday.

Mann took second place in long jump and third place in the triple jump, both the highest finishes he has accomplished at State.

Mann recorded a mark of 21 feet, 7 inches on his second attempt in long jump, taking the lead at that point. The winning mark of 22' 4 3/4" was made by Antonio Dowdy of Garden Plain on his final attempt.

Mann and Dowdy each had jumps of 45' 1" in triple jump. The tie-was broken by going back to each man's second-best attempt. A difference of one-half inch -- 44' 9 1/2" for Dowdy -- was the difference between second and third place. Tyler Barber of Herington won the event with a mark of 45' 7 1/2".

Two other finals were held involving Jayhawk-Linn athletes. Chelsea Beckman placed 10th in discus at 107' 10". Amory Miller turned in a mark of 106' 6" as she finished 14th in javelin.

Nearly every running event that had to go through a preliminary advanced to today's finals. Briar Snyder will be the No. 1 seed in the finals of both the boys' 110- and 300-meter hurdles finals. Snyder turned in a time of 15.48 seconds in the 110 prelims and a 40.73 in the 300's.

Morgan Eastwood qualified for both finals in the girls' hurdles. Her 16.29 in the 100's was third-best while her 48.28 in the 300's was sixth-best.

The girls' 4x400-meter relay team of Eastwood, Meriel Long, Cassie Rockers and Taylor Dawson finished with the best time in their heat, 4:13.30. Beloit won the second heat and will be the top seed in the finals with its 4:08.77.

The girls' 4x100 relay of Beckman, Eastwood, Rockers and Dawson was second in its heat in 51.33. Garden Plain won the heat at 51.28 while Douglass won the second head with the best prelim time of 49.99.

Dawson advanced to the finals of the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.85, second in her heat and fourth overall.

The boys' 4x100 relay of Mann, Ryan Sutherland, Dylan Thyer and Snyder advanced with the fifth-best time, 44.49.

Thyer was unable to advance in the 200-meter dash. He had a time of 23.69 in the preliminaries, which was fifth in his heat but only 10th overall.

Jayhawk-Linn's 4x400 boys' relay qualified for State but did not run in the preliminaries, which automatically eliminated them from further competition. No reason was listed on the results sheet.
