Mowry honored by Field and Stream magazine

Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Former Nevada resident Steve Mowry has been named by Field and Stream magazine as one of the July 2009 Heroes of Conservation. As a recipient of this award, Mowry will receive $1,000, which he plans to donate to three of his favorite conservation groups. Mowry is now a finalist in the nationwide contest. The winner of that contest wins $5,000 and a new truck.

The July article will feature Mowry and other winners. It highlights his work with prairie chicken restoration. A letter to Mowry from Sam Miller-Christiansen, a representative of Field and Stream magazine said, "It's a pleasure to recognize individuals such as you who are committed to preserving natural resources." Neither Mowry nor Miller-Christiansen could be reached for comment.

Mowry, a former resident of Nevada, a graduate of the Nevada High School class of '77 and now a Kansas City attorney, also is vying for an appointment to the Missouri Conservation Commission by Gov. Jay Nixon.

Mowry, who still has several family members living here, grew up hunting the woods and fields and fishing the various waters of Vernon County. Mowry also was featured in the June 11 edition of the Nevada Daily Mail.
