Nevada license office to close July 30

Thursday, July 23, 2009
The Nevada motor vehicle and driver license office will close at the end of the business day on Thursday, July 30, and re-open when a new license office contract agent has been chosen to replace the retiring agent. There's no word so far on how long that process will take.

The office, located at 113 S. Main St., will close at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30. The office also will be closed this Saturday, July 25, but will re-open for normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for the following week.

The agent in charge of the office, Tera Balk Elliott, has opted to retire, according to representatives of the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The office will re-open after the Missouri Department of Revenue has chosen a new agent to replace Elliott.

Common transactions that are conducted at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sales taxes on these units.

"It's unfortunate when an office has to temporarily close," said Alana M. Barragán-Scott, acting director of the Department of Revenue. "I know it will inconvenience some customers for a short time, but we are working to alleviate the problem. We have locations in nearby towns, and many people have the option of renewing their license plates online."

Customers who need to conduct business at a motor vehicle license office are encouraged to visit the following nearby locations. Address, phone numbers, and business hours are listed below.

Lamar -- 208 W. 12th St., No. 7, (417) 682-3555

Hours: Monday -- Friday, 8:30 a.m. -- 5 p.m.; last Saturday of the month, 8 a.m. -- noon

Stockton -- 534 West St., (417) 276-2228

Hours: Monday -- Friday, 8:30 a.m. -- 5 p.m.; last Saturday of the month, 8:30 a.m. -- noon

Butler -- 1 N. Delaware St., (660) 679-4566 Monday -- Friday, 8 a.m. -- 4:30 p.m., last Saturday of month, 9 a.m. -- noon

Osceola -- Do It Best Home Center on Highway Business 13, (417) 646-2901

Hours: Monday -- Friday, 9 a.m. -- 4:30 p.m.; closed for lunch each weekday, 1--1:30 p.m.; last Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. -- noon

A complete listing of offices, including directions and office hours, is available online at http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/offloc/.

Customers who have been notified that their personalized license plates are available at the Nevada office, and who can't get to the Nevada office by July 30, can pick up their plates on or after Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Lamar office.

To renew most motor vehicle license plates, many citizens of Vernon, Bates and St. Clair counties can use the Department of Revenue's Missouri Online Registration Exchange (MORE) to process license plate renewals online.

The Web address is http://plates.mo.gov/. Customers can't use the site to obtain driver licenses or renew personalized license plates, but it is an option for typical license plate renewals.

The department's call centers are also available to answer questions about MORE and other related issues.

The centers are open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For motor vehicle/license plate issues, you can call (573) 526-3669, and for answers to driver license questions, you can call (573) 751-1887.

Barragán-Scott stressed that the office closing was not due to the new bidding process involving all 183 of the state's local license offices. "

Governor Jay Nixon's proposal to let people present plans to run license offices more efficiently is working well," she said. "There are four bidders for the Nevada office, and the department is close to selecting the best proposal."

I don't understand how a woman as young as Tera can retire?

I hope that the new agent receives some training in manners and respecting the public so that those of us that have to deal with them don't endure the rudeness of this latest installment!

the article says Kera "opted to retire", I wonder what her other options were.

I don't know Tera but i do know that one time i was in there before noon and I was standing in line. And she got up and went and combed her hair and put lipstick on and put a small bag under her arm and as she walked out she said she was going to the bank. Leaving to go to the bank when there are people standing in line and its before noon why didn't she do that before she came to work! the last time I was in the Nevada office she wasn't even there and people where still having to stand in line and neither of these times were the end of the month. I hope next time I have to go there it will be fast better service. Good Luck with a replacement.

Tera and her family have relocated to Kansas. The staff of the license bureau were not the friendliest, but the problem wasn't tera in my opinion it was the other ladies with attitudes that worked behind that counter. Although the last time I was in there a couple of months ago, the rude lady was no longer there.

Tera was their boss, so yes it was Tera's problem if her employees were rude and she didn't do anything about it. There's lots of people needing jobs. All she had to do was give them an attitude adjustment or send them packing. We can all be replaced.
