FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- Two people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 69 near Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, 2000 S. Main St.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Friday, Shauna Nuzum and Guy Nuzum, both of Mt. Vernon, Mo., were hurt when the vehicle Shauna was driving collided with another vehicle near the corner of 20th and Main streets. Fort Scott police and fire departments, as well as other emergency personnel, responded to the accident.

Police said the accident occurred when a 1996 Ford Thunderbird driven by Matthew Messer-Roberts, Fort Scott, which was traveling south on U.S. 69, attempted to turn east on 20th St. Messer-Roberts failed to yield the right of way, and struck a 2004 Chevy Cavalier which Shauna Nuzum was driving northbound on U.S. 69. Guy Nuzum was a passenger in the Cavalier at the time of the accident, police said.

Emergency medical personnel transported both Nuzums to Mercy Health Center with undetermined injuries. Messer-Roberts was not injured during the wreck. Police said both Nuzums were not wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident; however, Messer-Roberts was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene. No further details on the accident were available as of press time.
