Max Allen Smith

Max Allen Smith, 80, Milo, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., following a sudden illness. He was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Collyer, Kan., Gove County, to Hugh Allen Smith and Mary Miska Smith.

Max grew up in the Pittsburg, Kan., area. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in Columbus, Kan., in 1946. He worked for many years for Hyman-Michaels RR Salvage Company until his retirement in 1995. Max has lived in Milo since 1998. He had a love for dogs and would take in any strays and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include three sisters, Virginia Pace, Stover, Mo., Stella Euilene Humble, Milo, and Sonjia Wilson and her husband Richard, Weston, MO; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Crocker Cemetery in Pittsburg, Kan. Friends may call now and until 8 p.m., on Friday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. The casket will be open at the cemetery 20 minutes prior to the service.
