Sybil Jeanette Standley, 63 of Garden City, Kan., died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at her home in Garden City. She was born on Dec. 25, 1945 in Uniontown, Kan., the daughter of Aldon and Mary (Canaday) Nuzum.
Sybil was born on Dec. 25, 1945, in Uniontown, Kan. As a child her family relocated to the Garden City area where she attended school. In 1963 she graduated from Holcomb High School. On Dec. 31, 1969, Sybil married Marvin Standley at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. Marvin and Sybil remained in the Garden City area for 22 years where they farmed.
She was a homemaker. In 1991 Sybil moved to Fort Scott where she worked as a department manager for Wal-Mart for 18 years. She returned to Garden City in February of 2009 where she would remain. Sybil enjoyed quilting as well as teaching quilting classes, she enjoyed stained glass and collecting Santa's and light houses. She was an avid Jimmy Johnson NASCAR fan and she especially loved spending time with her family and watching her grandsons at wrestling matches and at ball games.
Sybil was preceded in death by her parents Aldon and Mary Nuzum.
Survivors include one son Mark Standley of Garden City; two daughters Kimberly Everett and Misty Reimer both of Garden City; five brothers Cecil Nuzum of Colombia, Mo., Gary Nuzum of Charleston, Kan., George Nuzum of Garden City, Jim Nuzum of Garden City, and Darrell Nuzum of Garden City; one sister Deborah Tomlin of Garden City; and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Word of Life Church in Garden City, with Tyler Nuzum officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The Family request memorials be given to American Cancer Society or St. Catherine Hospice both in care of Garnand Funeral Home Garden City.
