The Nevada High School cross country team traveled to Iola, Kan., Tuesday and showed a strong performance. In the varsity boys' 5,000-meter event, Todd Brier and Alex Bledsoe nearly cracked the top-10 as they finished just 1 second apart in 11th and 12th, respectively. Alex Giunta finished 33rd, while Josh Newman and Casey Long rounded out the order for the Tigers in 46th and 48th. Both of Nevada's JV boys' runners posted top-10 finishes as Brandon Norton and Dalton Shunkwiler took eighth and 10th in the JV boys' 4,000-meter event, finishing just 3 seconds apart. Nevada's only JV girls' runner, Tayrin Schmitt, took 32nd in the JV girls' 4,000-meter event. As a team, the Tigers took fifth place overall, while Chanute won the event. The Tigers are scheduled to head to Pittsburg, Kan., next Thursday, Oct. 1, to participate in the Pittsburg Invitational. --Steve Brier/Special to the Daily Mail
