Lady Tigers win third tournament

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
MARSHFIELD, Mo. -- Adding to what is already arguably the best season in the program's history, the Nevada Lady Tigers golf team earned another tournament victory as they came out on top of the 16-team field at the Marshfield tournament Monday.

Head coach Brian Leonard said prior to the tournament that he brought a substantial amount of confidence to the table since this was the same field of teams that the Lady Tigers beat when they earned their second tournament victory of the year at Girard, Kan., on Sept. 10. That confidence turned out to be exactly the lift the Lady Tigers needed as they finished the tournament with an overall team score of 354 -- eight strokes ahead of second place Mount Vernon.

Republic took third with a combined score of 366, while Marshfield finished fourth at 380 and Carl Junction rounded out the top five with a score of 406.

The Lady Tigers have participated in five tournaments this year and with the exception of one of those tournaments, have finished second or better in all of them. The Bolivar Invitational on Sept. 8 was the only tournament in which the Lady Tigers did not place in the top two, only because they came up one golfer short of a full team due to Melea Galimberto being forced to withdraw due to illness.

At Marshfield, Mariah Jones showed yet another very strong performance as she shot what Leonard called a "fantastic round" of 81 for the Lady Tigers' overall best score. That score was only topped by one other player in the tournament as Mount Vernon's Jenna Brewer posted a tournament-best score of 76.

Emmaly Ellis had a very good day as well, finishing just four strokes behind Ellis at 85, followed by Galimberto with a steady 92 and Morgan Turner with her best round of the year at 96. Freshman Ashley Shumaker was disqualified from the tournament due to a scorecard technicality, but unofficially recorded her lowest score of the season at 103.

The Lady Tigers set out to add to their ever-growing list of victories again on Tuesday, traveling to Crestwood Country Club to participate in the Pittsburg Invitational.

THAT'S AWESOME!! Way to go Mariah, we are so proud of you and I know your parents are too, you have alot of supporters within this town and your family and church family as well! Despite how the kids at high school turn their noses up at you!! Yes, can you believe it at an assembly no applause no nothing when her name is mentioned and she is the one with the BEST score for the team, Oh, but everyone else gets a huge applause. Being a huge MU fan and knowing you are too, going to the MU golf camp this summer had paid off well!!!! Keep up the excellent job, sorry you didn't fair as well as you would have liked at the Pittsburg tournament, but you will have plenty of time to rest for the District play.
