Elsie Vernette Mitchum, 89, Nevada, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Christian Health Care of Nevada. She was born March 18, 1920, in Nevada, to Curtis Earl Peak and Elsie May Wolfe Peak. She married Robert Raymond "Ray" Mitchum on Jan. 6, 1946, in Nevada, and he preceded her in death on March 2, 1997.

Vernette was born and reared in Nevada and spent her entire lifetime here. She worked as an insurance secretary for Renwick Insurance Company for many years. She had been a member of Pine Street Baptist Church since she was 8 years old. Vernette served as the church pianist, founded the young women's missionary society at Pine Street Baptist Church and also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

Survivors include one daughter, RaNetta Mitchum, Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren, Christopher Shawn Peak Mitchum, Palm Desert, Calif., and Portia Lynn Millet, Salt Lake City, Utah; and two great-grandchildren, Blake Mitchum, Palm Desert, Calif., and Adam Millet, Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Ray Mitchum.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, with the Rev. Hubert Fox officiating. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m., on Monday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Memorials may be given to Pine Street Baptist Church in care of Ferry Funeral Home.
