Council to certify election results

Tuesday, November 10, 2009
The Nevada City Council will be considering a resolution certifying the results of the Nov. 3 City Council election and then swearing in newly elected council members Brian Leonard and Sherry Steward, which will bring the council back to full strength.

The council will also be considering an ordinance to distribute a $70,000 Workers Compensation dividend to city employees.

Other items on the agenda include: An ordinance to appoint the police chief and fire chief or their designee, as custodian of records for their departments; a public hearing on the consideration of an ordinance authorizing the city to apply for a taxi grant and an agreement with Allgeier, Martin & Associates for miscellaneous engineering services. The council will also be considering the appointment of Dan Sutton to the I.M.P.A.C.T. Nevada Tourism Board and Bo Bishop to the infrastructure board.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST ASININE THINGS I HAVE EVER HEARD. THIS IS THE TAXPAYERS MONEY, AND IF IT IS GIVEN TO ANYONE, IT SHOULD BE GIVEN BACK TO THEM. SOUNDS LIKE THE COUNCIL IS TRYING TO BUY THE VOTES OF THE CITY EMPLOYEES IN THE NEXT ELECTION. IF THE COST OF WORKERS COMPENSATION GOES UP NEXT YEAR, WILL IT BE DEDUCTED FROM THE CITY EMPLOYEES PAY? SOUNDS ONLY FAIR.

That's interesting because it sounds to me like the city came into some unexpected funds (I say unexpected because if they had been expecting to get this it should have been in the budget) and because of budget restraints they were unable to give their employees a cost of living raise this year so when the unexpected funds came in they took advantage of the opportunity to reward the hard working, loyal employees of the city. This is a good example of how different people have different takes on these articles.

Let us say there are 5000 taxpayers in nevada. If we devide the $70,000.00 by 5000 we get $14.00. Each taxpayer would get $14.00. Where will you spend your refund? I say give it to the employees. After all it was their safty record that caused this money to be returned. Just my thoughts. Keep seeking the truth.

Insted of appointing a fire cheif and police cheif it should be a hiring process, like all of the other towns around. If they would hire from in their own department as bidding on the job. And have them screned by other poeple in that feild,(county fire deparments and sherrif department)And not leaving it up to people on the city councel. Because have any of them ever been a fire fighter or a police officer in this town or county?

As for the money. It sure is funny that there is money coming in from everywhere now a days to build a community building for a few poeple to use and a new building to house equipment for the city on smelter hill. Are we going to broke again in five years and everybodys taxes going to go up to cover?

Darren, maybe you ought to read the story a little better. They are not appointing the Police and Fire Chiefs, just appointing the Chiefs to be custodians of the records in their departments.

As for all the new buildings, if you remember correctly, the taxpayers, myself included, voted for the Parks sales tax that was suppose to pay for those buildings. Since the voters voted for it, they have no choice but to build them.

I wonder how much CCMOM'S share of the pie will be? And TRUTHSEEKER67 should understand that 67% of the people who receive this money were not employeed by the city in 1998-99,when this was earned.

ccmom's share of the pie is 0. I simply read the article gave my comment I'm sorry that it could only be different from yours if I had something to personally gain.

For me a more interesting question would be why has it taken thirteen years to realize this money exists. I mean 1996 was a few years back. I must agree that I do wonder why we need a new community building that no one will use. Could it be because El Dorado built a new one a few years ago? I think Nevada needs to stop keeping up with the jones. On that same line did we really need a shelter house also? What we need is jobs. How about we spend some money to get companies to move here so we have jobs. Just my thoughts. Keep seeking the truth.

The Council is CONSIDERING an Ordinance to distribute a $70,000 workers compensation DIVIDEND.

Considering is the key word.

The city pays into workers compensation on a monthly or quarterly basis and for whatever reasons (this article does not state) the work comp carrier is reimbursing/paying back the city in the form of a dividend.

I agree with truthseeker. Something I have noticed over the years is this: Harrisonville tries to do the same crap that K.C. does, Butler tries to do the same crap that Harrisonville does, Neveda sometimes tries to do the same crap that Butler, Fort Scott, or Eldorado Springs does. Carthage tries to copy off of Joplin, Lamar tries to copy off of Carthage. The point is that the people running these communities are insecure and possibly feel inferior because of where they live. Maybe they should just move to a bigger city instead of trying to change the town they live in. Maybe they are embarressed to be where they are from. Maybe they are affraid to move to the next bigger town because they are affraid they will be looked down upon and treated as a 3rd class citizen- just like the way they have treated others that weren't part of their elite social click.

Why can't small towns just be 'small towns' instead of trying to be something they aren't- big cities. To bad we don't have any modern day Andy Griffith's to lead our communities.

The decision to build the comm center and shelter house was made because that is the ONLY thing that the money was voted on to be used for. The tax was for the parks and rec to use on capitol improvements and FINALLY that is what it is being used for. Dang people, stop being so negative and start looking at what an improvement this is to our city.
