* Osage Prairie YMCA pool addition wins award at American Institute of Architects Kansas City Design Excellence Awards.

At a Nov. 13 ceremony for Kansas City AIA's Design Excellence Awards, SFS Architecture was awarded the top honor, the Honor Award, for the Osage Prairie YMCA pool addition in Nevada, Mo.

The project, an addition to an existing metal building with an extremely limited budget, demanded economy in the building shell so funds could be directed towards maximizing the swimming pool.

The design solution, concrete precast panels with perforations, provides a durable building shell while allowing in natural light to animate the interior during the day. The glow from light reflecting off the water through the perforations also animates the exterior of the building at night.

The awards program recognizes excellence in design.

There were 1-44 submissions for the program and 6 awards given.

Projects eligible for submission included projects throughout the country completed by AIA Kansas City Members and any projects located within the geographic boundaries of AIA Kansas City.

The distinguished jury included Malcolm Holzman, FAIA, Holzman Moss Architecture, New York; Mark Sexton, Krueck & Sexton Architects, Chicago; and Susan Szenasy, editor in chief of Metropolis, New York.
