Tree of Shining Memories to be lighted Saturday

Saturday, November 28, 2009

It started life as the Hospice Shining Tree of Memories in 2001, but later changed to the Nevada Regional Medical Center Foundation Tree of Shining Memories. Under both names, it has been a sure and steady presence during the Christmas season.

A short ceremony, along with some entertainment, marks the lighting of the tree on the courthouse lawn each year. This year the Nevada Middle School Choir will provide the entertainment, singing several songs and Aimee Starlin, foundation director will count down to the lighting, currently scheduled for approximately 1:40 p.m., Dec. 5

The foundation raises funds by selling lights on the tree to those wishing to memorialize the life of someone, or to give a gift to someone who has all they need. The funds raised go into the Foundation account and are used for programs and services at the hospital. The first year the tree raised $5,110 Natalie Leeper, assistant to Starlin, said.

"We sell 500 to 600 lights each year and post the memorials in the hospital throughout December," Leeper said. "The last weekend of December we put the list in the Herald Tribune."

In addition to the tree on the courthouse lawn a second tree is erected in the hospital lobby and a list of donor's names is posted so visitors can peruse it.

Leeper said the deadline for donations is Monday, Dec. 21, anyone donating funds before then will be on the list posted in the hospital and in the newspaper.

"We try to make it as late as possible so we can get everyone in," Leeper said.

For questions, special requests or anyone wishing to purchase a light can contact the NRMC Foundation at (417) 448-3609.
