Toy donations needed

Tuesday, December 8, 2009
This large, nearly empty room, at the Vernon County Ambulance District Barn is usually full of toys this close to Christmas. The VCAD employees have been raising money and taking toy donations for 21 years. Things are slow this year, according to district secretary Jeri Senkevech. There are 300 children already signed up to receive toys, but the Senkevech said they normally provide a sack of toys worth $20 to about 500 kids and hope to do so again this year. "We're starting to get a little concerned," said employee Tina Werner. However, both women agreed that the people of Vernon County had always come through during this time of year. Those wishing to help can donate cash or drop off new unwrapped toys at the VCAD headquarters at 515 E. Walnut. The employees are also cutting and selling firewood to raise money for the toy fund. For more information call VCAD at (417) 667-5079. --Rusty Murry/Daily Mail
