Building demolition on council agenda

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

The Nevada City Council will be considering a bid to demolish the old First Baptist Church building, 114 W. Hunter St., during their meeting tonight at 7 in the City Council Chambers in the Public Safety Building, 120 S. Ash St.

According to the order to repair or demolish sent to Candice Grindstaff, Daytona, Fla., she had until Dec. 11 to make repairs or demolish the building.

The order, issued Nov. 16 by Eric Landoll, the city's code administrator, states that the roof of the building is allowing rain to fall into the interior of the building and because of this the interior floors are structurally unsound and there is mold and mildew throughout the building causing health concerns for anyone entering the building.

In addition to these concerns the order goes on to say that the mortar holding the exterior brick walls has deteriorated and can no longer adequately support the exterior bricks in several parts of the building and because pigeons have access to the building there are pigeon droppings both inside and outside of the building causing health concerns.

The council will also be considering two contracts that were postponed from previous meetings. One is a contract with M-Nod Taxi and Shuttle to operate the city's taxi coupon program and the second is a contract with the Western Missouri 911 Dispatch Center.

Other new items on the agenda include the approval of a replacement vehicle for the fire chief, as well as an ordinance to increase the library fund expenditures; a contract for HVAC maintenance at the City Hall; a contract with Western Missouri 911 Dispatch Board for payroll processing and a contract with Shafer, Kline & Warren to update the city's comprehensive plan.

The council will also be considering the fees for tournaments at the Twin Lakes ball fields; the fee structure for the use of the new community center; the fee structure at the Frank E. Peters Golf Course and the fee structure at Walton Park Family Aquatics Center.

The council will also be considering the final reading of ordinances approving an addendum to the contract with Sprouls Construction Inc., for the terminal building at the airport and a contract with the Missouri Safety Center to pay for overtime for the police to take part in several statewide enforcement programs.
