Vernon County prosecutor named to MSSU Board of Governors

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

On Tuesday, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Lynn M. Ewing III, the prosecuting attorney of Vernon County, Mo., to the Missouri Southern State University Board of Governors.

Ewing has served as Vernon County prosecutor since 1999. Prior to his service as prosecutor, Ewing was mayor of the city of Nevada from 1997 to 1998; at the time he became Mayor, he had served on the city council since 1993.

Ewing previously was an attorney with Ewing & Hoberock in Nevada. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant prosecuting attorney for the city of Nevada and as a member of the Nevada City Planning Commission. He also has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Nevada Area Economic Development Commission and served on a variety of local boards, including the Community Council on the Performing Arts, Moss Pre-School and Child Care, and the United Community Funds of Vernon County.

"Missouri Southern State University is a critical part of our higher-education system, and I know Lynn Ewing will help move this institution forward," Gov. Nixon said. "Lynn's expertise in public service and commitment to southern Missouri make him an ideal candidate for this important post."

Ewing will fill the seat vacated by David Ansley, of Springfield, whose term has expired. Ansley's departure follows offensive comments he made during a recent meeting of the Board of Governors.

"The comments made by David Ansley were inappropriate and offensive,"Nixon said. "After learning of his remark, I was committed to finding an appropriate replacement as quickly as possible. I am confident Lynn Ewing will serve the University, its students and the state of Missouri well."

This appointment requires confirmation by the Missouri Senate.
