The skies above Vernon County were bursting with colors and shapes of all sorts during the fireworks display at the fairgrounds Friday night, made possible by donations from the public.

I know they did the best they could, and everyone appreciates the effort. But was it worth it for a 10 minute display? And why no loud fireworks? Do they cost a lot more?

How much did you donate to fireworks Leland? I didn't see your name on the list of sponsors. How much help did you offer to make it better. I guess next year it will be better because your going to help out or donate a bunch of money.

I didn't see concerned_nevadian on the list either. I have donated many hours to local organizations, have you?

You know I'm agree for once with leland it wasn't worth the money that i paid in gas to find a lousely parking spot to find out that most of them you couldn't even see over the trees. I'm a very active person in a major committiee that raises money and I'm pretty sure if they had stuff to go along with the fireworks like a rodeo or some other thing i know the funds are out there and i know the demorcates are cheap just look at the president! but I know that tonights fireworks at rich hill will be awsome

With the short time and very short resources I was impressed with what they were able to pull off.
Many of us cannot afford things like fireworks and I truly appreciated being able to take the kids out for an evening with family and friends. They even had free water, music and steer roping.
I cannot wait to see what they are able to pull together with a whole year of planning.

Yes, Leland, I did contribute to the fireworks and I haven't just donated in the past I continue to donate my time and resources to local charities. I also make it a point to be involved positively with the happenings of our fair city. Can you respond the same?

I thought it was great, short, sweet and to the point. I thought some were really loud! I enjoyed it, thank you!

We enjoyed the display - thanks so much to all those who made it happen!

EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SHORT, IT WAS VERY PRETTY. MY SON WAS HAPPY WITH THE DISPLAY AND THAT IS WORTH IT TO ME. WE WENT TO DAVIS PARK AND PLAYED BEFORE THE SHOW AS MANY OTHER PARENTS. GOOD JOB!!

I'm not sure how the President and the Democrats factor into a discussion about a local fireworks show, but way to sneak it in there. On a side note, beware of the Demorcates!

I will definitly beware the Demorcates. Funny.

wow. how UNGRATEFUL some of you are! considering the fact that there was NO display last year, i think anything that was offered this year was great or rather, better than nothing.
pulling off a successful event takes an incredible amount of volunteers, money, planning, and coordination...and if you're lucky, the event comes off without a hitch.
the fact that a few folks and area businesses -- some of whom were from out of town, no less -- were generous and donated time or money to make the fireworks display possible at the last minute.
i was there. i parked and sat on the north side rodeo bleachers and had the best view of the display by far. yes, it was short and sweet, i totally agree, BUT...i looked around at some of the folks who were in attendance and realized that for some of these families, THIS fireworks display was the ONLY celebration they'd be having in honor of our nation's independence...not because they couldn't make other plans but rather, due to financial circumstances, there were no other plans to make: this was it for them.
for that reason, and for that reason alone, i considered this fireworks display a resounding success.
and by the way, i'm pretty sure it was NEVER the intention of the committee to try and outshine, outblast, outlast the Rich Hill fireworks display. How could they and besides, I mean, hello, as if??
but i digress, before i stop i want to take the time to thank all the members of the committee who made this event possible: democrats AND republicans, locals and out-of-towners, and the able and not-so-able but did it anyway.
and thanks to the Nevada MO firefighters for working hand-in-hand with the committee to ensure proper paperwork was filed, proper permits were obtained, and applicable rules/regulations were followed.
i'm looking forward to next year's event when there might be ice cold watermelon, homemade ice cream, more local music, and other offerings that are all just a prelude to the big display itself.
the way i see it is thusly: if you didn't contribute one penny in donation towards the fund that made the fireworks display possible, you don't get to criticize. PERIOD. those who did, well, i'm pretty sure are welcome to contact members of the committee to offer their respectful feedback and will be listened to/heard.
my thanks to those who made this possible.

Well mvenice I want to say this I had a nice weekend planned for my family and when we found out when they was going to happend we decided to stay in town to watch these and i lost a days deposit on where were staying because of the LOUSEY fireworks and it was money that i wont see again so yes i spent money on the fireworks
-- Posted by bigc78 on Mon, Jul 12, 2010, at 11:50 AM
Again, this year's display was better than last year's display which, oh yeah, was a big fat zilch nada! And if it hadn't been for the committee's hard work, there wouldn't have been anything this year, and more than likely, next year neither!
So let's see, Bigc78, you're blaming the fireworks committee for your OWN personal decision to stay in town on July 2nd for that evening's fireworks display and thus forfeit your deposit at a place you had reserved for the weekend all because you think the fireworks display sucked?!? Did they hold a gun to your head and say you have to stay that night and watch them and lose your money? No, didn't think so. You decided to stay; your decision, no one else's.
Do you not get it? The fireworks weren't just for you, they were for EVERYONE...especially those who couldn't afford to go out of town and do anything for the holiday weekend, much less spend money they don't have on personal fireworks they couldn't afford -- unlike you, apparently.
Get over it, get over yourself. You're a big girl/boy...stop blaming someone else for the results of your self-chosen free will.
Clue: the sun is the center of the universe.

I thought I had posted a comment a few days ago but I don"t see it now. I liked the fireworks.5 of my 7 grandchildren were there and they all lked them also. I really appreciated the people that thought of and put this together for Nevada. Now to bigc78 why in the world would you cancel your reservation just to see these fireworks? You had to realize they were going to be small due to the lack of advertising and time leading up to the fireworks. Where did you think a small group of people were going to come up with enough money to provide you with a large enough show to cancel your out of town reservations? As much as I try to support my home town I still would have gone out of town if I already had the reservations made.
