Downtown renovation

Chris Pendergrass hauls a piece of molded sheet metal up onto the temporary construction platform he and building owner Lee Day built in order to effect some repairs on the third floor exterior of the historic Mitchell building, which now houses the Cherry Street Grill. Day and Pendergrass have repaired some cracks in the masonry and are working to improve the appearance of the building by facing the windows, reworking the metal and giving the old hotel a fresh coat of paint. When he's done with the platform, Day says he will use the material to build an interior stairwell to the roof, which the building now lacks. Built in 1885, the Mitchell Hotel has been host to such famous people as Cole Younger, John Philip Sousa, William Jennings Bryan and others. Though the restaurant is open for business, Day said, "pardon our progress;" the work will be done soon.
