Vote no on Prop. B

Thursday, October 21, 2010

Dear Editor:

My name is Ethan Dade and I'm a senior at Nevada High School. I feel like people are misinformed about Proposition B being voted on November 2. People think that all Prop B is all about is stopping puppy cruelty. They do not realize what will actually happen if this bill passes. Some fast facts: Missouri is the number one puppy-producing state in the U.S. Missouri alone produces over 1 million puppies a year and sells them throughout the country. If this bill passes, the number of breeding dogs in a kennel will be reduced to only 50. So what is going to happen to the dogs in kennels that house over 50 female dogs? The kennel can't keep them. How many dogs are going to be exterminated throughout the state? We as dog lovers are going to have a limited supply of dogs. Where are we going to get our pets? This bill may also lead to lot more than just pets.

This bill has the potential to lead to the government telling farmers how many cows they can have on their land. There are a lot of farmers in Vernon County alone who have around 800 or 900 head of cattle. If that number is reduced to 50, how are farmers going to keep making a living off of 50 head of cattle? They're not going to. This could happen, and will make a lot of farmers go broke. Laws similar to this have been passed in California and Florida. In California, chicken farmers can now have no more than 50 chickens. That means that there are not enough eggs to feed California and the state now has to import eggs. The price of eggs has gone up 60 percent on the West Coast. Do we want that happening here in Missouri? I don't think so. The same familiar thing happened in Florida but with pigs instead of chickens, forcing the pork industry out of the state.

People, do not let the little sad "crying" dogs on TV get to you. They are only telling you what they want you to hear. They are not telling you the truth. Wayne Pacelle is the president of HSUS and supporter of this bill, and one of his quotes on the Internet is: "I don't care if I see another dog or cat born again." Some animal rights activist. Pacelle has a million dollars to spend on this campaign and is only spending less than 0.5 percent helping the animals. The other 95.5 percent is going to advertising, trying get to people to vote on their agenda.

We need to get the word out to the rest of Missouri. People do not know what this bill is actually about. If this passes, it will not be good news for anybody. If this bill passes in Missouri, it could pass in every state and then our supply of animals will eventually run out. HSUS grassroots coordinator, John Goodwin, said, "My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture." What kind of animal rights activist is that? This could go as far as taking away our right to hunt wild game as Pacelle quotes; "If we could shut down all sport hunting in a moment, we would." Proposition B is not what you think it is. It is not what they are telling you. Make the right choice; vote "NO" on Proposition B on Nov. 2.
