Hundreds honor fallen soldier

Members of the Patriot Guard and ordinary citizens bearing American flags surround the picketers from the Westboro Baptist Church to form a human shield between protesters and the grieving family of Spc. Dylan Thomas Reid before the soldier's funeral in Lamar on Saturday, Oct. 30. One estimate put the number of patriot guard motorcycles at 500. Hundreds of American flags and 2,000 to 3,000 people lined the streets of Lamar to honor the soldier and prevent the picketers from dishonoring his sacrifice and memory, the group said. Men, women and children of all ages attended and were observed waving flags and holding signs of support. The picketers dispersed shortly after the photo was taken. The event went peacefully. Services were held at 1 p.m., at Daniel Funeral Home. Full military honors were conducted. Reid, 24, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Amarah, Iraq, where he was stationed, "in a non-combat related incident," a U.S. Department of Defense news release said.
