Candidate list for two Nevada City Council seats continues to grow

The number of candidates for the 2011 city council election grew to seven Monday, with the filing of Jeff Bloom, 626 W. Hunter.

Bloom joins Sherry Steward, Brian Leonard, Myron Damon, Dann Sutton, Vince Laquidara and Randy Boultinghouse in the race for the two open seats currently held by Steward and Leonard, who were elected last fall to fill the seats that were vacated by the resignations of Joyce Wilson and Tim Wells earlier in the year.

A primary election will be held on Feb. 8, to narrow the field of candidates to four for the general election on April 5.

The filing period for the election closes at 5 p.m. today.

The Daily Mail needs to do some in-depth interviews with the candidates on their positions on ceetain issues. Much of the public is dissatified with the current council and city manager. I personally would vote for anyone except Steward and Leonard.

As we have done with every city council election, an identical set of questions relating to the office and current events will be asked of each candidate, and their answers will be published prior to the election.
It is refreshing to see so much interest in running for city council. The candidate field is usually so sparse that you wonder if people even care anymore. Hopefully, the eventual winners don't have any sinister motivation in running for office. No one on the list that I know personally would fall into that category, but I still hope the paper does some in-depth interviews before the primary.

I have said before and will say again. It needs to be a town hall where we can see the persons reactions to the questions. Also it needs to be where we can ask the questions and get answers right then. by sending each one a set of questions it gives them and their supporters time to come up with the so called "best" answer. I say put them in front of a crowd where they can't spin what they are trying to say. Its a lot easier to set at my computer and make up some bull then to have to stand in front of people and spread the same story. I need to see each persons reaction to a question before I can make a choice. Words mean nothing. Body language gives away more then words.

I like the idea howitzer. Now it is time for the paper to contact all the candidates and see who will show. Also print the names of the ones who decline to show.

I agree this is a great idea but don't quite understand why the paper should be responsible for it. Maybe howitzer could contact one of the civic organizations in town and see if they would back his organization of the event. It would have to be a group with a good reputation or the candidates could see it as a bash the candidates session which would not be productive. I know, even though I live outside the city, I would like to attend. It will be interesting if you get this off the ground.
