Recipients of special recognition awards stand with the plaques awarded to their organizations during the 2010 United Way Appreciation and Awards Luncheon held at the Nevada Country Club on Friday, Jan. 21. Adam Dean, president and co-chair of the Vernon County United Way fund drive, welcomed those in attendance and asked Deanna Giessel to say grace for the meal. Luncheon sponsors were recognized and board members asked to introduce themselves as the meal was being served. The Nevada Soundsational Singers performed three songs near the end of the meal and Dean moved on to presenting certificates of recognition to luncheon sponsors, local media outlets and the team responsible for the annual Oktoberfest. Special recognition plaques were presented to 3M as the largest overall contributor, to Great Southern Bank and KCP&L for 100 percent participation and the Nevada Wal-Mart Supercenter as the most improved contributor. Empire Gas Co. and 3M received plaques for the highest per capita contributions. The United Way fundraising goal for 2010 was $115,000 and the talley stood at $109,208 as of Friday, but Dean thought there was enough money still coming to close the gap. He did say that to him it was just as if they had hit their mark. In closing he said, "We do the most amount of good we can regardless of the amount of money we raise." Plaque recipients, left to right: Todd Weber, Steve Stinson, Sara John, Deanna Giessel and Anita Rolando.
