Citizen of the Year nominations sought

Each year, the Nevada Rotary Club bestows on one of Vernon County's own an honor recognizing that individual's dedication, care and commitment to the community.

The organization is now accepting nominations for the 2010 Citizen of the Year. The award will be presented to an outstanding citizen of Vernon County in April 2011 and nominees need not be affiliated with the Nevada Rotary Club The nominating committee prepare ballot, then past Citizens of the Year available to do so will then vote to select the winner. A long-standing tradition, the Citizen of the Year award has been presented annually since 1942, when the first such honor went to J.H. Bean, who was managing editor of the Nevada Daily Mail. At that time, it was a project administered by the American Legion, but later the Rotary Club took on the project.

Over the years, many others have joined the ranks of those chosen, including 10 attorneys, six educators, five journalists, three doctors and a host of civic leaders who made their mark on the community

The Citizen of the Year should be one who has worked for the betterment of his/her community. Some attributes the committee look for are community involvement, participation in charitable events, and involvement in civic organizations. This award is for someone who volunteers his/her time and talent to help the Vernon County community outside of their job requirements. The Citizen of the Year should have high moral standards, be devoted to service above self, be recognized as a community leader, and have a record of civil mindedness and community responsibility. The committee will consider all nominations received very carefully.

Nomination forms may be picked up at the Nevada Public Library, the Chamber of Commerce office, or the Edward Jones office of Myles Miller, at 501 E Cherry.

The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, March 25.
