Leonard, Steward re-elected

Nevada City Council incumbents Brian Leonard and Sherry Steward easily won re-election Tuesday while Vernon County R-5 School Board incumbents Nora Quitno and Steve Cubbage got new terms with school panel newcomer Jeremy Fast prevailing in his effort to replace the retiring Larry Forkner.

Leonard tallied 331 votes and Steward 308 as runners-up Jeffrey Bloom and Randy Boultinghouse recorded 233 and 179 respectively. Voters were asked to choose two candidates.

A crowded field of municipal candidates had been whittled from seven to four in a Feb. 8 runoff election with the top four vote-getters then finishing in the same order they stood on Tuesday.

Quitno garnered 779 votes to Cubbage's 646 and Fast's 602. Other candidates were Nathan Forkner, 418; Chris Hendren, 405; Rick Baker, 218; Adam Dean, 188; Denise Jenkins, 157; and Michael G. Freeze Sr., 58.

Voters were asked to indicate their preferences for three people.

At the end of a windy day, County Clerk Tammy Beach said only 2,032 of the county's 12,059 registered voters, or 16.85 percent, had officially registered their preferences.

The turnout was poor or some of the candidates might have done better....too many 40 year old males living in their mother's basement could not pull themselves away from their blogs or video games to go vote....mom must have been calling, "Supper is ready!"

The citizens lose. I guess we deserve what we get. Just remember you had a chance to make things better and you didn't.

Turnout in Nevada is always poor. The good thing is that the people who can see the quality of life improving in Nevada because of the aggressive steps the city manager is taking with the backing of the council are obviously the ones that vote.

If you keep doing what you have always done you will keep getting what you have always got. For what its worth those for and against the current council only have themselves to blame for what the council does next. Good or bad you get what you vote for.

I put up a sign at the office reminding people to vote. I couldn't even tell you how many people asked, "What are we voting for?" Just then I realized most of the citizens in the city limits don't care what goes on in this town, good or bad. The ones who do care, the majority likes the way the town is ran. That's why we vote, so that the majority that do care, get their voices heard, and they were heard. They like the town ran the way it is being ran, so be it. However, I'm still allowed to voice my opinion, because I DID VOTE!

I do wish Brian Leonard and Sherry Steward well in their city council seats. Personally, I don't know either one, and know that they sure don't get paid for the stress that position carries. I'm sure it's a hard job to try to figure out what the majority of the town expects from you and would never personally want that responsibility.

I echo Ana's comment. I wish Brian and Sherry the best. It is a thankless job they do. They dont get paid to do it and give valuable time that could be spent doing other things. Being in that position you are constantly under the spotlight and you can never please all of the people. I just pray that God will work through our city leaders to do what is best for this community no matter who we have in office.

Why have these sites where we can voice our opinion, but yet, if the editor does'nt like what we have to say then they/you just delete it. I simply speak my opinion, but yet, I guess my freedom of speech and press don't mean a thing anymore.
