Council to discuss sales tax holiday

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

In recent years the state of Missouri has held a statewide back-to-school sales tax holiday in early August. Municipalities can decide to not participate in the event. In recent years Nevada has participated in the event. During tonight's city council meeting one of the issues the council will consider is the first reading of a special ordinance opting out of the back-to-school sales tax holiday.

The council will also be considering several other ordinances on first reading, including a change order to the Boyd Painting Co. contract for sandblasting and painting the Walton Pool; a special ordinance setting rural fire membership fees; a special ordinance authorizing the city to sponsor an Emergency Shelter Grant application for the Council on Families in Crisis and a right-of-way solicitors application for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Other new items on their agenda include three requests for proclamations: Arson Awareness Week, National Nursing Home Week and National Hospital Week.

The council will also be considering the second readings of four special ordinances. First, an ordinance approving a contract with C.D.L. Electric Company, Pittsburg, Kan., for construction services on the U.S. Highway 71 interchange lighting project. Second an ordinance declaring Nevada's old fire truck as surplus so it can be disposed of; third, releasing the NID assessments on lot 14 of Ashland Estates, owned by Stutesman Realty. Fourth, an ordinance approving a development agreement with Alan D. Shepherd and Linda L. Shepherd regarding the construction of a liquor store.

They will also be considering the appointment of Wendy Barton to her second three year term on the I.M.P.A.C.T. Tourism Board and the appointment of Karen Polon to a three term on the parks and recreation board.
