Local USDA office joins federal summer food drive

Friday, June 24, 2011

The Vernon County USDA Service Center will be participating in the National Feds, Farmers and Friends Feed Families summer food drive, now through August 31. The local service center is comprised of the Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Vernon County Soil & Water District and an MDC Conservationist and is located at 102 W. Allison in Nevada.

Service Center chair Suzette Berthing, said, "The national goal for the 2011 food drive is to collect 2 million pounds of food. Area farm producers, gardeners. Extension office employees and any other interested community members or groups are invited to assist us in our efforts to meet and contribute to this goal."

Berthing added,"Although this is a national food drive with the amounts of donated food being reported to a national data base, contributions made locally will be used to assist those in need in our community."

In addition to canned and packaged products, fresh produce and processed meat less than 3 months old will also be accepted. We do ask if there will be any donations of a large quantity, that we be contacted in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made to minimize loss or spoilage and ensure distribution in a timely manner.

"I feel this is a great way for area gardeners to participate by donating their excess produce," Berning said.

Donations may be brought to the USDA Service Center which is open 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of Federal Holidays, and is located at 102 W. Allison, two blocks north of the Courthouse. Berthing, and co-chair Darci Malam, may be contacted at (417) 667-8137, extension 4, with any questions or to make any special arrangements.
